17  General / Check this out! / Gamereactor.se blog about not games on: July 30, 2011, 09:24:30 AM
Was checking one of the blogs of the Swedish(nordic) free gaming magazine, when i stumble upon one post about not games. Nothing new in there, but great that other people then us in the games industry are starting to think in different ways.

18  Creation / Notgames design / Re: Pricing a notgame? on: April 23, 2011, 05:06:00 PM
i agree that we should not sell out and being too cheep but i also think we should avoid the way CD/DVD/AAA-games have gone. Which nowdays cost to much to be affordable for all sorts of people. So yea, maybe a price point between 50$ - 200$ totaly depending on the work. But i think its important to fill all different price catogeries so we could have allot of variety of what people are considering to buy.
19  General / Everything / The year of the notgames(Happy new year) on: December 31, 2010, 11:01:03 AM
5 hours left until new year here in Tokyo, im just going out to dinner right now but before that i really wanted to wish everybody here a happy new year!

It has certainly been a truly interesting year but i really think the coming year will be something special for all us involved with this. For my self i havnt been so active writing on the forum but ive read most of it and i must say it has been great inspiration for me in my own works, so thanks everybody that's been writing!

So everybody keep up the spirit and continue the "pursuit for notgames"! Lets make next year something special!
Happy New Year!
20  General / Everything / Re: Which one of Franz Kafka's short stories do you like best? on: September 24, 2010, 12:11:55 PM
I've only read The Castle, and i liked it really much. Have two other novels by kafka lying around, so i will read them pretty soon.
21  General / Check this out! / The Sopranos (contains spoilers) on: August 29, 2010, 04:25:12 PM
This is just some thoughts of mine, nothing new under the stars, but thoughts we could use as we explore the interactive media.

For many years i wanted to watch The Sopranos after hearing so much good about it. So 1-2 month ago i started to watch the series and finished the 21:e episode of the 6th season the other day. And for those who not know about The Sopranos(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0141842/) it's drama about a maffia family set in modern New Jersey. It's really well written, directed and good production values.

SMALL SPOILERS

Anyhow the thing i want to take up is the last scenes of the the whole series. It's not interesting in a story kind of way because the ending is kind of expected, but rather in the way he uses the essence of film making(as been discussed in another thread), editing.
Every cut is well planned and have it's meaning. The basics of is that he introduce a pattern of  cuts/views that he repeates until the last second of the episode.Thou not only, there's alot of other stuffed in there to but that is whats strikes me as most interesting.

The pattern follows(everything takes place at a restaurant): 1.The door bell rings as someone enters the restaurant. And the same time a shot on Tonys(the main character) face as he looks up to see who entered. 2. A POV shot from Tony as he looks at the door.

BIG FAT SPOILER

Instead of explaining the scene you should watch it instead.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnT7nYbCSvM&feature=player_embedded

You can now be pretty sure of what happend to Tony right?(dispite alot of other theories) The last shot which is totaly black is Tonys POV at that time, dead. And i think this is a really good example of using the uniqueness of the film media to deliver this last scene. And not only that, i think i feel more for this black shot than if they would've shown it in 3rd person that he got shot. I really think that this cut convey a feeling of death and nothingness, and i felt kind of bad after seeing it, like i felt sorry for Tony that death is only this dark nothingness.

END OF BIG FAT SPOILER

Anyhow i wish that we could some day have the same experience of some interactiv media. That you really feel that this is a true work of art to use the essence, the uniqueness of what the media is offering and not only reproduction of another media or weak use of the media.

So how do we do this and what points of interactivite should be focused on?  Kiss
22  General / Introductions / Hej! on: August 28, 2010, 07:35:47 PM
Hi! I've been lurking around for a while, so i thought it's time for a proper introduction. Cool

My name is Henrik and I'm from Sweden but i've been living in Tokyo since January this year. Currently I'm studying Japanese and just enjoying every day in this amazing country.

I'm an educated game programmer but recent years ive been as much designer as programmer. And the interest is not only game design but all kinds of design from architecture to industrial design. After 2 years of education i spent 2 years at my own(+ friends) independent gamedevelopment studio. Doing various kinds of outsourcing jobs and also working on our own IP. But it all eventually came to an end due lack of motivation to make games, among other reasons. At this time i was really tired of most of the games that was released and felt kind of hopeless towards games.

But since i've been away from game development and later moved to Tokyo i've felt inspired by the notgames movement and the potential of working with this unexplored part of the interactive medium. I'm really interested in the essence and uniqueness of this medium towards others.

My homepage just redirects to my twitter page right now until i have something to show. So right now im working on my first project using Flash/AS3 creating a foundation for the piece to eveolve from. Hopefully i have something to show pretty soon.

Actually ive heard the same from one of my friend. He couldnt get out of the pit in the beginning so he stoped playing the game. Why is games like that?

Pit? There is no pit at the beginning of the game.
No? Was a while since i played it, i remembered that there was i pit in the beginning of HL2:Ep). maybe not a pit but you had to get up and out from somewhere. But i played it when it was released and my memory sucks. Tongue

Why is games like that?

They don't have to be. Read this.
Really nice written Michaël! Quite inspiring.

26  Creation / Reference / Warren Spector GDC Europe talk on: August 17, 2010, 01:54:40 PM
Heard that Warren Spector had kind of interesting talk at GDC Europe, where he talked about the difference between games and other media, so here's short article about it. It's good that other people starting to thinking about what the essence of videogames and interactive media is and not only try to replicate other media.

Oh i really want to go, last year was fun meeting all the people. And as you said this year should be more talk and less just making games, which sound awesome. To far to go this year though.

Found this neat little interactive story on newgrounds, worth checking out i think. So how do "we" look at interactive stories? Often you really don't have a goal, just exploring the story. But the interactivity is pretty limited....
So do we still call this a game? Or do we seperate interactive novells from both games and "notgames"?
