Yeah both of these were based on Processing sketches at one point. Tongue

I love procedural graphics because I think they pretty clearly visualize some of the fundamental beauty of nature, math, and physics (and therefore from my POV, of God).  Here are some illustrations I've done lately in that field, mostly hacking pre-made open source things:

I've been trying to think of more meaningful interactions that can be created with these visuals, beyond a mere toy.  No conclusions yet, though...

Welcome Ed  Cheesy

I really enjoyed seeing Proteus/Nodeland a while back.  I hope you continue work on it.  And it will be great to have you in some of these discussions, too.

Welcome Victor.  Great to see another person here.  Even if you don't make stuff, it's encouraging to see support at this early stage.  Sometimes people who are just observing and interacting in a creative community can benefit it as much as any creator.  So don't feel bad.

Beautiful. And this is the point which I leave this place, before I even begin. Smiley Good luck with what you are trying to achieve. I mean that in a sincere and non-sarcastic fashion. This likely isn't the place for me.

Surely we can be more constructive to prevent this kind of response?  It was very good of bento to say that he was leaving and why, but it seems that the reason was because it felt like a destructive atmosphere.

Welcome!  Most of us here aren't against games, but hopefully we can discover some new things by exploring other directions.  It will be good of you to join in. Smiley

I played Valentine, and I enjoyed it too Smiley  A good way to explore something complex from different perspectives.

Maybe the goal of a game is to make it happy. Smiley

Very interesting thought.  I think you could take this perspective with current games even.  They want you to treat them as an entity, so they expose their rules as a system to make you more aware.  And then they want you to make them happy by conforming to those rules and goals.

But in an ideal educated world, who would want to eat McDonalds hamburgers?
...
But unless I can get a job with one of you before starting for myself that is unlikely Wink

I know what you mean.  Here's a question using the same metaphor:  What if you had 4 months to find that job, and after month 3 no one was hiring?  How'd you spend the last month?  Would your job search change?

I do think it would be interesting to play a game that is composed as a pop song: intro - first verse - chorus - second verse - chorus - instrumental variation - chorus - outro, for instance. It could be an interesting way to move away from linear narrative towards something more poetic. And rhythm is definitely an under-appreciated quality in game design.

I can speak to this.  This last summer I created an interactive music video that I played in church on a screen while my friend Paul played a song.  The game had an intro that matched his first verse, and then from there I could switch scenes at will.  I had 3 scenes to switch between, one specifically designed to match up with his chorus.  Within each scene, there were a number of elements I could interact with.  A video is here if you're interested: http://www.godatplay.com/2009/07/branches-interactive-music-video-prototype/

It's a pretty crude prototype, though.  I'll be working on a slightly updated version of this idea using a Wii remote that's due Feb. 27th.  In my application, it will be used for a VJing gig, but my intention is to eventually allow for a multiplayer experience of playing visual instruments with the music.  I'll post something about it here once I get it more completed; it'd be great to get feedback anyway.  It might be more rhythm game oriented than you're wanting examples of increpare, but the structure itself is centered around the modern pop music structure.

If you click on my Bell Brothers link above, you'll see the games linked at the bottom of the website there.  You might have missed the link; on some screens it can be hard to see this green.

Your comment about games labeling is why I think Michaël has resisted calling notgames a category and argued instead that it be considered a design method.  From that perspective, the point of my case study was to point out the different design methods being employed in the creation of videogames.  But to me, design methods and labels are pretty synonymous in this context.

I don't think anyone will resist you if you just refer to everything as games.  Smiley

Have any of the people here feel guilt at involvement in the production of something they felt was ultimately an abuse of others?

Yes.  Totally.  I made a recent game but haven't released it yet, and the friends that are helping me test it have become pretty addicted to it.  And that makes me feel guilty because the game is basically entertainment + joke + psalm.  My intention is that people play it for 30 minutes or maybe an hour, get a kick out of the joke, and then after playing it think about the subject of the joke more seriously as they continue to entertain it in their minds.  But these guys have played it for maybe 20-30 hours each, or more, which is clearly more than needed for testing.

And why?  Because I had to make it a game that's fun and addictive so that portals will want it so that I can pay the bills.  I have to sell it and make it sound like it has value, because that's how capitalism works.

Huh.  Guess I went from guilt to bitterness there. Tongue

Hey Paul. Smiley  Nice to see you here.

I can't speak for Michaël, but from my POV, "games" refers to videogames - games you play only on the computer.  The "format" refers to the quantifiable outcome, or goal, that games have, in addition to certain parts of the abstract rule-based system that define games.

Case study: Bell Brothers
Echogenesis - notgame
Record Tripping - game

Obviously the world isn't black or white, but this might give you a better idea of the intention.
