But it's a bit like xenophobia, isn't it? The unknown instills fear

boy, you say so  Wink It took me more than 10 years to watch L'annee derriere a Marienbad... and
it is now my favourite film of all time. New ideas take time. And each generation
needs time to get used to new ideas... it takes time. Slow but steady work will do the trick

btw. does anybody know Beyond The Black Rainbow?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc8OGbETxf4

Panos Cosmatos, the director,  is an 80s geek/nerd or you can say he is obsessed by
Horror/Scifi movies of that time... also I like the idea of a black rainbow

it's all about the merchandising

I have watched the early George Lucas of THX 1138 (and his student film on the same theme). It is Star Wars without the crap.
The sounds and visuals are wonderful, almost an abstract movie. Star Wars was the mass market application of THX 1138.

Star Wars I was enough. Lucas should have moved on, but he was hit by fame. He might have done great work, but fame was
intercepting.

THX 1138 director cut comparisons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIfTT8EGj3A

and the original from 1967, Electronic Labyrinth THX1138 4EB
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oESKJ4LCVo

great work in my opininion. Forget Star Wars.

I dislike modernism

You mean you do not like the works of Francis Bacon, John Cage, Bunuel, Picasso, Greenaway, Robert Wilson, Meredith Monk,
Goddard, Oskar Fischinger, Strawinski, Duchamp etc...? I am not that deep into art theory. I like 20ths century art more than
the art from the 19th century (for example).

On the other hand I know what you mean. I was recently in Amsterdam. The new museum for modern art opened (the bathtub).
I could not bring myself to pay 17€ for modern, exhibited art. I took a glance at the catalog and it was quite
boring.

I would not put all contempory artists in one corner. Also, I still do not know what modernism is supposed to mean.

Stalin and Hitler were "great" connoisseurs de l'art. They knew exactly what was good art and what was bad art and acted
accordingly.

I would not want to put myself in those shoes.

cheerio,

p.s. sorry for side-tracking the discussion

20  Creation / Reference / IGF Finalists on Steam on: December 07, 2012, 11:30:24 AM
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/12/06/valve-to-offer-igf-finalists-steam-distribution/#more-134557

At first, it sounded good that IGF Finalists could get distributed with the help of Steam/Valve...
But if I think of it, I am not convinced at all that it is a good idea.

Since I make my games without a buisness model in mind, they can get very off-mainstream and are really not
suitable for a steam distribution. Steam is gamers land!

How does that decission influence the judges? They might think, hm, that stuff is not suitable for steam,
it should not become a finalist?

Am I exaggerating here? Maybe...

This is plain ignorant. There are many attempts that did speak to the intellect...
22  General / Check this out! / Re: The Walking Dead on: November 23, 2012, 09:55:19 AM
Yes, a very good game. I like it that they did not go "realistic" with their character models.
It does not feel "uncanny" that way.

Things that did not work for me: When I was solving a puzzle and could not get
to the solution immediately (1st episode)... there was a lot of going back and forth
triggering the same dialog over and over. Then it felt very gamey, took me out
completely. I am still in Episode 2, and I wonder if I will stuck somewhere...

When you are not stuck, then there is good pacing overall.

One issue I have is that I read maybe 80% of the comics, so it
did not feel that fresh to me. Comparing to the comics there is more
downtime where I walk from here to there etc...

An interesting task in Ep.2 was when I had to distribute five food rations to ten people.
Who do you give something? Those decisions where really something different...

looking forward to play more...

But I think games are a wonderful medium for storytelling - as is film

I agree to disagree Wink

I read a short story of Lovcraft this very week, which gave me the idea for a narrative experiment.
(Hint: Steve Reich, Piano Phase.) I will start working, and let us see what we can do with
narration (I hope it will be wonderful Wink )
24  General / Everything / Re: What? This wasn't obvious? on: November 22, 2012, 10:06:36 AM
thanks, why are these articles always sooo loooong? Need to read it later...
25  General / Everything / Re: Narrative? Really? on: November 20, 2012, 03:59:17 PM
Yes, the best medium for narration and writing is still the book.

Also many get confused to use heavy narration/writing in a game,
because they look at the movies at the wrong angle. I can't count
how many movie critics spread the false assumptions that movies are
a storytelling medium. Even most of hollywood directors believe that
that is true.

So my deepest wish is that game developers and filmmakers would give up storytelling.
You can't beat Anna Karenina that way ...

If I can have one more wish: game developers/designers should give up moviemaking, too!

I make an example: Music does not need to tell a story, architecture, ballet, sculptures, paintings do not
need to tell a story. I thought we were all clear about that...

If you want an experience to be remembered, you'd focus on non-gameplay. If you wanted to develop some skill, you'd focus on gameplay.

That's not always a valid assumptions. I am an avid chess player (playing in a club). Chess is pure gameplay and I have very great memories of some matches I've won or lost. Also I have memories of my opponents, how they behaved, who they were etc... so it is one, complete experience.

Chess is not an art form, but still...

I had some great complete experiences with games, where mechanics and audio-visual experience came together like in Tetris, REZ, Every Extend Extra Extreme, Bangai-O  (hm, all more or less abstract experiences). I would put them in the same category like a string quartet or a symphony (abstract music), opposed to opera etc...

I think when gameplay, mechanics, and the audio-visual experience come together, that's a great experience to have.

cheers
27  General / Check this out! / Re: "Games Don't Need Saving" on: November 11, 2012, 10:20:04 PM
Wink I misread : Games do not need save(points)... like no saving of progression.
Let's make games without saving

cheers

Saw this in the notgames tumbler. I first thought it was some random blogger. Then I saw that it was a dev, which felt extra coolt. But a dev that made Painkiller Shocked

Hey, Painkiller is a pretty classic FPS. Story almost nonexistent (good!), because if I have to choose between a mediocre/rubbish story and no story, I prefer not to have a story... It was a pretty entertaining game. Strange and weird.

I am interested if/what will come out of that corner of the industry. People grow up and suddenly they might realize, that they do not want to make FPS+1
29  Creation / From the ridiculous to the sublime / Very vague idea for a boardgame on: November 05, 2012, 11:11:20 PM
I am an avid chess player, but I wish to play a board game, where I only play 10 moves.
10 moves and the game is over. So that every move counts. 10 moves at most.

It should take at least 5 hours to complete a match.

It should have an abundance of rules and exceptions.

Maybe it should be only 5 turns.

Maybe (crazy I know)
I make my turn
you make your turn
and then we discuss
for the rest of that night
who has won.
